Mr John Terrace BSc (Hons.) MB ChB FRCSEd PhD
Having graduated from the University of Edinburgh Medical School in 2001, I undertook all of my early and higher training in general surgery in Edinburgh, including time spent completing a PhD. My surgical training was extensive and incorporated the full range of general and specialist surgical practice, including a final period of specialty fellowship in Guy’s Hospital, London. I spent several years of my Edinburgh training under nationally- and internationally-renowned surgeons in more advanced laparoscopic (keyhole) hernia and gallbladder surgery and also developed a specialist interest in laparoscopic adrenal surgery.
I was appointed as a Consultant Surgeon in the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh in 2015 and I have an extensive specialist laparoscopic (keyhole) surgical portfolio encompassing significant experience of hernia surgery of all types and gallbladder/gallstone surgery. My specialist laparoscopic practice also extends to adrenal surgery and as the dedicated adrenal surgeon for South-East of Scotland I lead this service in the NHS. In addition, I am one of only 3 surgeons in the East of Scotland undertaking laparoscopic living donor kidney surgery as part of my work in kidney transplantation. I am a member of the British Hernia Society which aims to ensure national and international quality in hernia surgery and I am a member of the national representative body for adrenal surgery, the British Association of Endocrine and Thyroid Surgeons.
I have great interest in supporting the careers of those interested in surgery and providing structured surgical training and mentorship. I have several roles in providing clinical supervision and training for registrars in surgery in addition to supervising and teaching medical undergraduates.
My focus in looking after my patients has always been in providing safe, effective and comprehensive treatment where patients feel at the centre of their care. I offer a personalised, open and friendly approach where communication and trustworthiness are paramount.
